Valery Vermeulen, mathematician & musician
Valery Vermeulen (aka Tamuraj) is a musician, new media artist and mathematician.
In 2001 he obtained a Phd in pure mathematics at the University of Ghent. After these studies he decided to explore ways to combine both his passion for music and mathematics. As a consequence he started working in 2001 at the Institute for Psychoacoustics and Electronic Music (IPEM, University of Ghent) on a research project focusing on the link between music and emotions.
At the same time Vermeulen started writing and recording music in his own home studio. Subsequent productions from this period cover a broad range of styles such as electropop, electro house, soundtracks and purely experimental electronic music. Between 2001 and 2005 he played different live sets with different bands at various locations including Vooruit (Ghent), Tour & Taxis (Coral Fashion Awards, Brussels), Post Plaza (Ghent), Gentse Feesten (Ghent), STUK (Leuven), Van Eyck Lodge (Ghent) and a mini tour in Portugal.
Besides his work as producer Vermeulen is also active as a multi media artist. In 2003, a collaboration with visual artist Angelo Vermeulen led to the realisation of the multimedia project called SKANNER, an interactive inquiry into the nature of human fear. SKANNER was presented between 2004 and 2005 at various occasions and venues including Atomium (Brussels, Belgium), Beursschouwburg (Brussels, Belgium), Z33 (Hasselt, Belgium), W139 (Amsterdam, the Netherlands) and for Liebaert Projects (Kortrijk, Belgium).
Inspired by the SKANNER project and his work at the IPEM Vermeulen started the EMO-Synth project in 2006. This project focuses on the development and application of a new interactive multi media system called the EMO-Synth. The EMO-Synth is hereby a system that automatically generates music and manipulates images to direct the user in pre defined emotional states. As the project was growing Vermeulen founded the collective Office Tamuraj in 2007 to elaborate numerous different aspects of the EMO-Synth. Until now the EMO-Synth has been presented at various locations including the festival Happy New Ears 2009 (Kortrijk, Belgium), Muhka Media (Antwerpen, Belgium), Gallery One Twenty (Ghent, Belgium), Lineart 2007 (Ghent, Belgium), Croxhapox (Ghent, Belgium), expo Strong Art (Ghent, Belgium) and L.A.C. (Lieu d’ Art Contemporain, Narbonne, France).
Currently Vermeulen is working with Office Tamuraj on the latest version of the EMO-Synth, called Prototype 05. This development is moreover supported by the Flemish Audiovisual Fund (VAF) in a project entitled “Montage Cinema Revived by the EMO-Synth”. With the elaboration of Prototype 05 the EMO-Synth is used to automatically generate personalised soundtracks enhancing the emotional impact of a given movie. “Montage Cinema Revived by the EMO-Synth” will be shown in premiere on december 4th at art cinema house Offoff cinema
